Thankfully, ALL of our teas now come in plastic-free or biodegradable teabags. To find out which one you’re drinking, and for more packaging information, read the list below.
Our main Dragonfly organic tea range
Our core organic tea offering (Cape Malai Chai, Moroccan Mint, Swirling Mist, Moonlight Jasmine and others) uses string-and-tag teabags which are, and have always been, plastic-free and staple-free. This is because they are not heat-sealed, but rather folded and then stitched together.
What can I recycle?
All of our boxes and the 'envelopes' which wrap these string-and-tag bags are all recyclable as paper. These still need to include a very thin barrier coating of plastic (which is free from BPA and PVC), however the amount is so small that it can go in your household recycling with normal paper. We see this is as an interim measure whilst we look for an entirely plant-based solution.
Our Dragonfly large leaf pyramid teas
Our large leaf teas come in pyramid bags (Jasmine Pearls Green Tea, Earl Grey Tea etc.) that are made from polylactic acid (PLA), which is a renewable and sustainable biopolymer derived from plants. The pyramids are fully biodegradable, are free of all plastics derived from petrochemicals, and are also staple-free. The inner pouch that these bags come in is made from wood pulp and is fully biodegradable as well.
Are your teabags compostable?
All of our teabags and tea pyramids are now compostable, however please don’t compost them at home. This is because your home compost won’t necessarily provide the right level of heat, pressure and microorganisms to ensure they fully break down. Instead, simply pop them in your Food Waste bin for collection by your local authority, or if that is not possible, then they can go in your normal household bin.
Dragonfly Organic Rooibos range
Finally, we are delighted to say that our Dragonfly Organic Rooibos range (Vanilla, Earl Grey and Breakfast Rooibos) are now also packed in fully plant-based and biodegradable teabags, sealed with a natural plant-based material. As such, you will be able to put them in your Food Waste bin for composting by your local council. This is has been in the planning for a long time and we are thrilled so see them finally hitting the shelves.
Is the inner pouch compostable?
When you open your pack you will see that we have had to use a foil inner pouch which is non-biodegradable. However, this is an interim measure – we are currently trialling a better solution and hope to have some results to show for it soon!
By the way...
If you still have one of our older packs of Rooibos in your kitchen cupboard, these used a teabag paper made up of natural cellulose from wood pulp and a small amount of food safe polypropylene fibres (a type of plastic). These fibres allowed the edges to be heat-sealed. We can assure you that these fibres were not made of Nylon or PET, the subject of a Canadian study on microplastics that has rightly had much media attention.
