Do Dragonfly teabags contain plastic?
We are all aware of the problem with plastic and how this is affecting our planet. Thankfully most of our teas come in plastic-free or biodegradable teabags. To find out which one you’re drinking read the list below.
Our core organic tea offering (Cape Malai Chai, Moroccan Mint, Swirling Mist, Moonlight Jasmine and others) uses string-and-tag teabags which are all plastic- and staple-free. The teabag envelope is recyclable as paper.
Our large-leaf teas come in pyramid tea bags (Jasmine Pearls Green Tea, Earl Grey Tea etc.) that are made from polylactic acid (PLA), which is a renewable and sustainable biopolymer derived from plants. The pyramids are fully biodegradable, contain no oil-based plastics and are also staple-free.
Our Rooibos range (Vanilla, Earl Grey and Breakfast Rooibos) currently uses teabag paper that is made up of natural cellulose from wood pulp and a small amount of food safe polypropylene fibres (a type of plastic). These fibres allow the edges to be heat sealed and stop the bags from falling apart in hot water or in the box. We can assure you that these fibres are not made of Nylon or PET, the subject of a Canadian study on microplastics that has rightly had much media attention. However, we are not happy with the current materials and are keen to make changes. We are in the process of moving towards fully biodegradable teabags for this range and hope to make the transition in the next three to four months.
