In China, the art of delicately scenting teas with freshly gathered flower petals goes back many hundreds of years. Jasmine tea is the most famous of the scented Chinese teas, but there are many others whose ethereal perfume can delight and inspire. Orchid green tea is scented with the fragrant petals of the Yulan or 'Jade Orchid' (actually part of the magnolia family). The plant’s beautiful white blossoms, eulogised by the great Chinese poets throughout the ages, are picked by hand and expertly layered on the tea leaves until the scent is absorbed. The tea master’s art lies in achieving a perfectly rounded and balanced taste, one that is not overpowered but rather elevated by the sweet, opulent floral notes.
